Taking a photo that is not a phone or digital camera can be hard, but it helps to think about the photo before just a point and shoot. When I take a photo, I make sure that I know the basic functions of a camera. It is not just so simple as snapping a picture from a phone for example. Cameras take more time when setting a photograph. This includes, exposure, modes, shutter speed, etc… After I adjust the settings on my camera, some questions I may ask myself are, what the lighting is doing to the object? Is it too bright of light or too dark? Does my subject communicate the idea I want to convey? Is this position the best option? And many more. I really could spend a great deal of time thinking of a better way to compose a shot. Although all of the things mentioned are great and all, what I find that makes a good photo is the light and composition of the object/ scene.
One of the things that I find to be hard for me, is finding inspiration in the things I look at. My Dad, who is a photographer, will often say “It is not about positioning the subjects in the image to look interesting, it is about creating the image to be compelling when shot from new perspective.” In other words, try to make the photo interesting and inspiring without the help of photoshop. A person can be just as inspired from an image with thought, than an image with extra designs and construction.
